I want very much to enroll in and complete your graduate school program so that I will be able to advance professionally in my work in our criminal justice and corrections systems. With an MSc Degree, for example, I would be able to qualify for a case management position with my current employer, the ____ Secure Center. in Toronto, Canada. My short-term goal is to successfully complete the MSc in Forensic Psychology and apply for the case management position. I graduated from XXXX College with a BSc in December 2010 with a major in Biology. Previously, I graduated in 1994 from the ____ Business School with a Medical Assistant Certificate. I feel strongly that my undergraduate studies in Biology, building upon my studies as a medical assistant, have prepared me well for graduate work in forensic psychology. I thoroughly enjoyed my classes in psychology and sociology, and psychology is the right area for me to continue my studies. I have also matured a great deal because of meeting difficult challenges during my undergraduate years. In 2000, I had to temporarily discontinue my studies because I was a single mother and had to care for two terminally ill relatives. In 2010, however, I returned to ____ College and completed my undergraduate studies. Previously I had worked on important research projects studying the effects of pesticides on fish. By the time that I returned in 2010, however, my interests had changed, and I devoted myself to the study of juvenile delinquency. Since I had been working for a youth detention facility for 3 years already, I decided to author my principal research paper on “The Development of Violent Behaviors within Juvenile Delinquents.”
My work experience also helps to qualify me for graduate study. I work in a maximum secure juvenile detention facility which has exposed me to many of the critically critical issues and questions faced by the justice and prison systems. I have worked primarily as a keyboard specialist in the business office where my job duties are to process purchase orders as well as medical & dental claims for residents. I have been employed at the Secure Center since 2008, so I have had the opportunity to become quite familiar with secure facility policies and background information on youth detainees. My exposure to a secure environment has sparked my genuine interest in helping juvenile delinquents become rehabilitated so that they can someday leave the system.
During my undergraduate studies, I enrolled in a class focused on Interpersonal Communication Skills, a decision that significantly influenced my personal and professional development. This course was not merely an academic requirement; it became a pivotal moment in my life, setting me on a transformative path that involved many years of dedicated and often arduous work aimed at enhancing my communication skills. Through various activities, role-playing exercises, and in-depth discussions, I learned the nuances of effective communication, including active listening, empathy, and the art of persuasion. These skills became essential tools in my toolkit, enabling me to navigate complex social interactions and foster meaningful relationships.
One of the most profound realizations I had during this journey was the potential impact that effective communication can have on individuals who are struggling, particularly juvenile offenders. I have come to believe that the greatest contribution I might be able to make to society lies in my ability to help these young individuals embrace positive change in novel and creative ways. Many of them find themselves trapped in cycles of negative behavior and hopelessness, often feeling that their circumstances define their identities. My aspiration is to intervene in this cycle and assist them in learning to think outside their box, encouraging them to challenge the limiting beliefs that have been instilled in them by their past experiences.
To achieve this, I aim to employ innovative techniques that resonate with their unique experiences and perspectives. By integrating elements of storytelling, art, and even technology, I hope to create engaging and relatable methods for them to express their thoughts and feelings. My goal is to persuade them to put aside their negative attitudes and instead cultivate more positive ways of thinking. This approach not only helps them envision a brighter future but also empowers them to take actionable steps toward achieving their goals.
Building trust is a crucial component of this process. I understand that many juvenile offenders may have faced betrayal and disappointment in their lives, making it difficult for them to believe in the sincerity of others. Therefore, I aspire to win their trust through consistent, compassionate communication and by demonstrating genuine care for their well-being. I want to show them that they are not defined by their past mistakes but rather by the choices they make moving forward. By establishing a safe and supportive environment, I hope to convince them that they possess the strength and capability to turn their lives around.
