Anonymous Sample 1st Paragraph for the MA in Psychology

Your intensive weekend program leading to the MA Degree in Psychology at the XXXX Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) is my first choice for advanced professional training because of what I see as the unparalleled emphasis that you place on the holistic dimensions of mental health and well being. Probably the weakest aspect of my application is the fact that I earned my undergraduate degree in industrial design. Nevertheless, my studies did connect with Psychology at many points – particularly industrial organizational; and I also earned a minor in Holistic Health. Thus, I feel strongly that I am an excellent fit with the XXXX and your dedication to holistic strategies.

I come from a long background of academic and professional training and volunteer work in the advancement of human rights, especially in the Developing World, working to strengthen principals of gender and racial equality, human liberation, progressive communication, and spirituality, all in a search for increasingly creative and constructive ways to make the world a more egalitarian and harmonious place to live, particularly through the advancement of environmentally friendly technology.

Most of the work that we do is on behalf of women, minorities, and applicants from other parts of the world who wish to study in the USA, Canada, Europe, or Australia. I look forward to helping you soon.

My name is Dr. Robert Edinger.  I help applicants to graduate school in psychology from all over the world. I only do my best, taking the time to reflect on your story as well, usually doing some internet research on your behalf.

Psychology Personal Statement Writing and Editing by Dr. Robert Edinger

Rising incarceration rates, returning veterans, interest in personal development and changes in health-care reform all point to the need for more psychologists in the U.S. Businesses are now looking to Industrial-Organizational Psychologists to improve the productivity of their operations, and everyone is now more accepting of the need for individuals and organizations to take more responsibility for their own mental well-being and health.

Society is increasingly turning towards prevention as a solution to wellness. The Affordable Care Act signals a response to this trend. The Prevention and Public Health Fund has already set up programs to fight obesity and smoking, for example.

Economic pressures have also fueled changes in the way employers view applicants. Psychologists need to demonstrate a high level of competence and education to even be considered for a job, as well as internships and hands-on experience, and the PsyD provides just that.

The rising costs of university education in the U.S. also means that there is a larger budget for the employment of PHDs and PsyDs to teach in university establishments, more money for research, and the quickening pace of changes in the demands on society - increased stress levels, reliance on medications and the incidence of mental health disorders, etc., have led to a greater need for psychology commentary and inevitably, solutions to these changes.

To Whom It May Concern:

It is with great pleasure that I recommend XXXX for admission to your Master’s Program in Counseling for Mental Health and Wellness. As founder and director of the undergraduate Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Program at XXU, I encounter many students who aspire to work as therapists and practitioners in the field. XXXX, however, will be most memorable, standing out from the crowd for her level of enthusiasm and engagement with both the material and the people with whom she comes into contact. Thus, I could not be more confident that she will make a most excellent contribution to your program and go on to serve on the cutting edge of Child and Adolescent Mental Health.

I had the privilege of being XXXX’s mentor throughout two of my courses since she completed a minor in my field, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Studies. In almost every course that I have taught, there are one or two students who are at the forefront of class discussions, thankfully, helping to make teaching more interesting, engaging, dynamic and exciting. In both of my courses taken by XXXX, she was that outstanding student on her toes all the time and keeping me on mine as well. It was an honor to have her as a student.

I shared most memorable moments working with XXXX towards the completion of her midterm project for my Adolescent and Child Psychopathology course.  The assignment involved performing a psychiatric evaluation alongside a clinician of a child or adolescent at the XXU Child Study Center. I was able to closely observe both her charismatic ability to gain the confidence of children, almost immediately, and her analytical prowess in the formulation of a well supported diagnostic evaluation. XXXX’s intuitive as well as empathetic nature and character make her an excellent candidate for state-of-the-art research into the mental health of children and adolescents - in addition to being a practitioner.

What I most admire about XXXX is her sheer passion; which I see as central to what makes a great mental health counselor. We had several lengthy and enjoyable discussions about a range of topics related to the mental health of children and I found her grasp of the literature to be most impressive. Her unbridled excitement is contagious, and when she left my office I felt energized myself to explore new areas and angles in our profession. What she shared with me about the prevention of eating disorders was especially insightful, demonstrating her thoroughgoing grasp of the physical sciences as well as early childhood development. On this point in particular, I felt as if I were engaging with a junior colleague in the department rather than a student. I can assure you that XXXX is a top tier candidate for our program and it would be a pleasure to provide you with any further information.

Trends in incarceration in the USA point to the need for well-trained PHDs and PsyDs in the area of Clinical Psychology.

Since 2002, the USA has had the highest incarceration rate in the world. In 2010, the rate of prisoners per 100,000 residents was 500 according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics. In 2015, levels rose to 2.2 million. There is a stark difference between this figure and the 1.3 million of 1998, and the 400,000 of 1982. There has been a 500% population increase in the nation’s prisons and jails in the last forty years, due to changes in sentencing law and policy, resulting in prison overcrowding. One in three black men and one in sex Latino men will now go to prison during their lifetime

Many of these inmates are seen to have active suicidal or homicidal ideation, intent or plans and/or do not make use of the food, clothing, shelter or other activities offered to them because of a mental disorder. Mental health screening to identify disorders such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, major depressive disorder and mental developmental delays are mandatory. Psychologist and psychiatrists are needed for emergency duty to deal with the increasing numbers of incidents of rape, mania, panic attacks, deaths and victimization.

The rising need for therapy, court-ordered assessments, and other tasks in this challenging environment must be tackled with a high level of professionalism, and this demanding job needs experienced individuals who are very highly trained, like PHDs and PsyDs, to treat the mental illness and disability of the inmates in these special circumstances, which are growing in complexity.
